Years ago my father put in my mind the idea of hiking the Appalachian Trail. For years we talked about going on the trip. Now, years later, I still have this great desire to "thru-hike" the trail. I have done much reading and study, and hope that someday I will get the opportunity to do it.
A few years ago (back in 2002) I took my first hike upon the last five miles of the trail (going north) to the summit of Mt. Katahdin. That too was a dream of mine and I got to share it with my girl friend (later at the summit my fiancee). It was a wonderful day and when we got to the top I asked for her hand in marriage and she said yes. The end to a perfect day.

Hey David--I enjoyed reading about your dream to hike the Appalachian Trail. I have wanted to do that as well, and I hope that someday, when I retire, I might get to at least hike some of it. A friend of my son (who is your age and a UF graduate!) hiked the trail right after he graduated from college. I'm not sure how far he went, but he said it was pretty amazing. Is your Dad able to hike with you? By the way, what a great way to propose to your girlfriend!
I was curious..I see that you say you are living in exile in Florida--I remember reading your introductory powerpoint (I think it was that) and you said that you had moved from Gainesville to Orlando and really missed Gainesville. I lived in St. Cloud, near Orlando, and have always loved Gainesville too. Do you want to move back to Maine someday?
David,
A close friend of mine hiked the Appalachian trail. It was a long-time dream of his as well - and a life changing experience. I hope you get the opportunity to pursue your dream too.

Thank you, Sandy, for your post! Well, if I had my first choice, I would move back to Maine in an instant. But I have made quite a life for myself with Kris here in Florida. Orlando is nice...but I don't think that we have found a "small town" type place yet here. I know that they exist but we are still looking.
As for the AT, I don't know what the answer is concerning my Dad. I would like to hike with him, if not whole thing I would hope he could join me for small segments.
Hi David,
I've never been to Maine, although I would like to consider going there because of the lobster. When I think of Maine I imagine beaches, grass weeds, rocks, and just serenity. Am I close or way off?
One of the teachers I work with is from Maine and shes always talking about how its not exciting.
I hope you get to hike that trail one day. The closet I've been to hiking was on a study abroad trip in Austria. Every morning we had to walk to school. The route was very scenic and had lots of inclining points. The first day we started the trail, it seemed we that we were walking for days, but we soon got used to it an even found shortcuts (Public transportation). Don't ask what took us so long to figure that out please. Anyway, I'm rambling. Just wanted to take up some space. Ciao!
